Sometimes you don’t need another podcast, productivity hack or five-step morning routine. You just need a journal, a quiet moment and a question that makes you think a little deeper.
These are 20 prompts for when you want to check in with yourself, get something off your mind or simply understand yourself a little better. No perfect answers required. Just be honest with yourself.
1. What’s one word to summarise your focus right now?
If you had to describe what’s taking up the most space in your life right now, what would it be?
2. What was one thing that surprised you recently that you haven’t processed yet?
Sometimes the things that catch us off guard are worth sitting with.
3. What’s one loose end you’ve been mentally carrying, and what would closing it look like in one small action?
You don’t have to fix everything today. What’s one thing you could finally tick off?
4. What’s one “what if” thought you’ve been holding onto for years?
The one that randomly comes back at 2am. Write it down.
5. What do you do differently when you feel observed vs. when nobody’s watching?
What changes when there’s no one to impress?
6. What area of your life could you pay more attention to?
Maybe it’s your friendships, finances, health, creativity or simply yourself.
7. Is there anyone in your life you can be completely yourself around? What about them lets you open up?
Think about what makes you feel safe enough to drop the act.
8. Who do you owe a reply to, and what’s the honest reason you haven’t answered?
No judgement. We’ve all got that one message sitting there.
9. What boundary do you say you have, but don’t enforce when it gets uncomfortable?
A boundary only really works when you’re willing to stand by it.
10. What’s one self-care thing you do that’s actually avoidance?
Be honest. Sometimes a three-hour everything shower is self-care. Sometimes it’s procrastination with candles.
11. What emotion do you try to drown out with sound, content or noise, and what does it want you to notice?
What happens when you let yourself sit with the feeling instead of immediately distracting yourself?
12. Would you be friends with you?
Not the polished version. You, as you are right now.
13. What kind of love do you respond to the most?
Think beyond romantic love. What makes you feel genuinely seen, valued and cared for?
14. Where does your time leak without you noticing?
Scroll time? Overthinking? Saying yes to things you don’t actually want to do?
15. Who makes you jealous, and what can you do to channel that into action?
Jealousy can be uncomfortable, but sometimes it’s pointing directly at something you want.
16. What moment recently made you feel most like yourself?
It could be something tiny. A conversation, a song, a random Tuesday afternoon.
17. What’s a responsibility you’re carrying that isn’t yours?
You don’t have to solve everyone’s problems.
18. If you told five-years-ago you where you are right now, what would her honest reaction be?
Would she be shocked? Proud? Confused? Maybe all three?
19. When you feel overwhelmed, what’s the first thing you do that makes it worse?
Notice the pattern before trying to change it.
20. What did you learn about yourself lately that you don’t want to forget?
Write it down. Future you might need the reminder.
You don’t need to answer all 20 in one sitting. Pick the question that makes you pause the longest and start there.
Write badly. Write honestly. Change your mind halfway through. Leave a page unfinished and come back tomorrow.
There’s no right way to journal. Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is simply give yourself somewhere to put the thoughts that have been taking up too much space in your head.
So grab your journal, put your phone away for ten minutes and see what comes up.
